The Cannes Film Festival kicks off tomorrow with movie and fashion fans alike braced for the celebrity peacocking that has become part and parcel of this legendary event.
Last year highlights included Julianne Moore in Louis Vuitton’s flared white jeans. The year before fashion editors drooled over actress Charlotte Gainsbourg in a Saint Laurent tuxedo.
This year the camera come-ons started early. A whole day ahead of the festival, in fact – in the arrivals hall at Nice airport.
And so far the front-runner by a country mile is actress Anya Taylor-Joy who made her entrance through customs wearing, not travel-friendly jeans, trainers and a T-shirt (as seen on fellow Cannes actress Lea Seydoux) or black jeans and a leather coat (the airport arrival look of star Eva Green), but the sort of outfit you might have expected to see on Marilyn Monroe circa The Seven Year Itch.
The smart young actress, 28, who has built a reputation for forging her own path since bursting on the scene as a chess prodigy in The Queen’s Gambit, clearly calculated that the show begins the moment you hit the ground, so why not hit it running?

Or rather sashaying, in £750 high-heeled, ankle-strap Jimmy Choo Ixia sandals and a curve-clinging bombshell of a one-shoulder dress from Atlein Paris’s new collection that could have been borrowed from the wardrobes of Joan Crawford or Rita Hayworth were it not so flimsy. No room for serious underpinnings here.
And Ms Taylor-Joy didn’t stop at the Gentlemen Prefer Blondes dress: she looked like she was auditioning for a remake of High Society in her £340 ultra-wide brimmed La Chapeau Bomba hat by Jacquemus, cat-eye sunglasses and starlet-red lipstick.
And maybe she was. Cannes is all about showing off and showing your range and Ms Taylor-Joy’s latest film is Furiosa, the fifth in the Mad Max franchise, so her old-school Hollywood glamour turn is something completely different.
Meanwhile, her peers will be wondering if she has set a new bar and the accepted uniform of A-list first-class fliers is no longer luxury cashmere sweats or jeans and a baseball cap, but your best in show South of France crowdstopper.
